Kobato Exam 5
Oh, damn, this is turning into a regular thing already...

Scans are available at [info]ladydarkmoon's place. Special thanks to [info]syaoranmew for helping with a few kanji lookups.

Exam 05: Chocolate and Valentine

-01- (splash: Kobato)

Side text: Whose is the lost chocolate?

-02-

Kobato: Waaah---!

-03-

Kobato: There's a lot of hearts and ribbons downtown!
Ioryogi-san!!

Ioryogi: That's because today is Valentine's Day.
Kobato: I know, Valentine's Day!

Kobato: It's a day when you give chocolate to the person you like, right?
Ioryogi (SFX): Oh!

Ioryogi: Coming from Kobato, isn't it a straight-forward comment?
Kobato: I've studied! Through the TV!

Kobato: But, are Valen-san and Tine-san twins?
Or siblings?
Kobato (SFX): Since it's Valen-san and Tine-san's day, they're certainly close friends...
Ioryogi: Over there!

-04-

Sign over the store's entrance: European Pastries Tirol

Sign near chocolate (right): pure chocolate
Sign near chocolate (left): chocolate cigarettes

Yumi: Sorry to keep you waiting!

Yumi: Everyone from Yomogi Nursery School will certainly be delighted to get chocolate from you, right, Sayaka-sensei?
Logo on bag: European Pastries Tirol

-05-

Sayaka: That's because everyone loves the sweets from Tirol.
Yumi: Thank you very much!

Sayaka: I'm the one who should thank you for giving me a discount.

Ueda: Please say that to Fujimoto-kun.

Sayaka: Eh?

Ueda: He helped stock up on Valentine's Day chocolates.
Ueda: He must've had a hard time with so many part time jobs. I had the price cut as thanks.

Sayaka: Was that so?

-06-

Ueda: And also,
this.

Sayaka: Eh?

Ueda: You were looking at it, so I wondered if you'd like it.
Sayaka: Eh! But......
Ueda: Because having seconds is excellent. (T/N: "Seconds" as in repeating a meal.)

Ueda: Please come again without fail.
Fujimoto-kun as well.

Sayaka: ...... Yes.

-07-

Kobato: Valentine's Day is
on the day of Valentine-san... (T/N: "Valentine's Day" is wasei eigo, while "day of Valentine-san" uses the proper Japanese word for "day".)
SFX: egu egu (T/N: Sorry, no idea on this one.)

Kobato: Cutting it off at Valen and Tine is no good.
It's no good.
SFX: hote hote (T/N: Toddle toddle.)

Kobato: I remembered---!
Ioryogi: Really... All I do is be the tsukkomi. If you want to get loaded with something, then load straighter information into your head! (T/N: The  first part of the second sentence is off. Anyway, manzai.)

-08-

Sayaka: I wonder if it looked like that.
What that person likes and such.
Even though I thought I'd forgotten it a long time ago...

Sayaka: If I don't hurry back to the school... (T/N: I'm guessing here that she's using the last character in 保育園 -- nursery school -- as an abbreviation. If translated literally, it means "park".)

-09-

Kobato: Ah!

Kobato: There's something near the bench!

SFX: pisu pisu (T/N: Sniff, maybe.)
Ioryogi: It's chocolate.

Kobato: Today is Valentine's Day...
Which means, this is something that someone prepared for the sake of someone else, isn't it?!

-10-

Ioryogi: Maybe, maybe.
SFX: fua (T/N: Yawn.)
Kobato: But, it's here!

Kobato: And, there's no one around!

Kobato: This was lost!

Kobato: I just found something that was lost!!

Kobato: Chocolate!
Isn't there a person who dropped chocolate!!?

Ioryogi: Hey.
Hey!
Kobato: There's no answer! Maybe they moved further away!

Ioryogi: No!
Therefore!
Uoh---?!
Kobato: Where is the person who dropped the chocolate!?

-11-

Sign: Yomogi Nursery School

Sayaka: I'm back!
Logo on bag: European Pastries Tirol

Fujimoto: Welcome back.

Sayaka: I'm sorry for leaving the afternoon nap for you alone.
Fujimoto: No, everyone
behaved like good children, so it's all right.
Fujimoto: I'll carry it.

Sayaka: Thank you.
Sayaka: Besides, I truly thank you for going to help out at "Tirol".

Fujimoto: No, it's nothing.

-12-

Sayaka: Fujimoto-kun, the more awkward you feel, the blunter you become, right?

Fujimoto: It's not like that.

Sayaka: Ah!
Fujimoto: What's wrong?

Sayaka: No, it's nothing important.

Sayaka: Then, since you're wearing an apron, can you go ahead for me? (T/N: This line is awkward. The logic conclusion is that she's asking him to perform some kitchen duty, but I'm not sure.)
Fujimoto: Ah, yes.

Sayaka: ...... I wonder if I dropped it.
It's inexcusable to the manager of "Tirol", but... Maybe it was such fate.

-13-

Kobato: Not anywhere......
Kobato (SFX): The person who dropped the chocolate.

Ioryogi: On top of that, time's over.
Kobato: Aah! Valentine's Day is over already---!!

Kobato: Say, say!  Against the lost object, how about my conduct?!

Ioryogi: Searching for the owner in the event of finding a lost object is proper.
Kobato: Then, this time?!

Ioryogi: But, instead of running around, wouldn't it have been quicker to take it to the police?
Kobato: Eh?!

-14-

Side text: Without finding the owner of the lost object, the chocolate goes to Ioryogi. Do your best! Kobato!

Ioryogi: Therefore,
Ioryogi: 35 points for Kobato!

Kobato: N- Next time---!!
SFX: bori bori (T/N: Chewing, I think.)
Ioryogi: Then, Valentine's Day is over.
We can eat them now.

I don't know about Watanuki, but that totally was Himawari on page 2.

Dear CLAMP-sensei,

Please make it so that no one in Kobato ever does business with -anyone-
in the downtown again.

Much love from your friendly translator on the other side of the world,
Haiiro no Neither

Fujimoto's hairstyle pwns... pretty much everyone else's hairstyle. Someone go tell Fai -that's- how you wear a ponytail.

On a more serious note, I think Ioryogi was pretty mean this time. Also, he's been with Kobato for a while, why can't he at least give her some hints, such as looking for behavior standards in something other than television? Yeah, Kobato either isn't human, or is a human somehow supported by magic. I don't see how a human aided only by an unhelpful guardian/judge such as Ioryogi could possibly survive for so long.

Wah! Hazukashii yo! ._. Thanks, Neither-sama! ^^ Though I didn't do much... x_x *head still hurts for looking at the confusing radicals and look-alike kanjis*

Well, back to cleaning my house before my family arrive from their little 1-week vacation. @_@

It's partially my fault you couldn't do much, I forgot that you probably don't have an offline dictionary. I have a "Japanese resources" post somewhere in this LJ, it's easy to find since it's the only entry in the "memories". You can find a link to JWPce there. It does the job quite well, and eliminates the time waiting for online dictionaries to respond. (Plus the radical buttons are more intuitive than the ones on my dictionary, since they use pictures instead of a Japanese font.)
