xxxHolic, chapter 155
I apologize for the delay. My sleeping schedule just won't stay put. T_T

Chapter 155

-01- (splash: Yuuko)

Because so that people can change
all that's needed is meeting---

Watanuki and Kohane. Their bond tries to change the
circumstances that they couldn't change alone.
With non-stopping feelings for her mother in her chest,
what kind of future will Kohane wish for!?

-02-

Side text: Watanuki calmly talks about Kohane's mother's violence. But his back was overflowing with determination and honesty!!

Watanuki: How many onigiri will you have? (T/N: Onigiri.)
Doumeki: ... Five.

Doumeki: So, you didn't run this time, huh?

Watanuki: Had I run back there, she'd probably have targetted Kohane-chan.
Watanuki: Ingredients... salmon, plums, salmon roe,
what else?

-03-

Doumeki: Yakitarako and torisoboro. (T/N: Yakitarako is grilled cod roe and torisobo is minced chicken with soy sauce.)
Doumeki: You could run with her.

Watanuki: There's no torisoboro.

Watanuki: Yeah.
But that mother likely wouldn't have stopped if she didn't hit someone.
Doumeki: Irijako. (T/N: Some kind of fried fish.)

Doumeki: So? Why is that you had to be hit?

Watanuki: Okay.
Irijako I have.

-04-

Watanuki: If other people had been hit back there,
a little oversight and it'd turn into assault.
Watanuki: And then it'd make Kohane-chan even sadder.

Doumeki: Oh well, make six.
Negi miso. (T/N: Negi is a type of onion.)

Doumeki: And when she saw you get hit,
Doumeki: do you think that kid wasn't sad?

Watanuki: Yeah.

-05-

Watanuki: But Kohane-chan, of course... didn't want to see her mother in a situation any harder than this one.

Watanuki: Besides, even if something happened upon my being hit,
Watanuki: you were there.

-06-

Doumeki: ... You really did
hit your head, didn't you?
Doumeki: And a hard blow at that.

Doumeki: Hey, make grilled fish too. And deep-fried tofu.

Watanuki: Just how much are you gonna eat in the morning?

Doumeki: Make it.

Watanuki: After Yuuko-san and Kohane-chan's breakfast!

-07-

Doumeki: Where's that kid?
Watanuki: With Yuuko-san.

-08-

Kohane: Thank you for letting me stay the night,
Kohane: and for this kimono too.

Yuuko: It suits you well.
Kohane: ... Thank you.

Mokona: You're not like when you came yesterday.

Kohane: I myself don't know.

-09-

Kohane: But,
Kohane: maybe it's because I was able to cry so much.

Mokona: Mokona likes Kohane this way.

Kohane: ... Thank you.

-10-

Yuuko: This is a shop where wishes are granted in exchange for a price.

Yuuko: Kohane-chan.
Yuuko: For you to have been able to come into the shop
means that you have a wish.

Kohane: ... Yes.

Yuuko: And what is your wish?

Kohane: I'd like mama

-11-

Kohane: to be happy.

Kohane: But, the way things are, even if we're together, it'll only get worse.

Kohane: So first I want to be happy
and wait for mama to notice

-12-

Kohane: that happiness isn't stuff like money or showing up on TV;
Kohane: just being happy together with your loved ones is enough.

Kohane: ... When I met Kimihiro-kun
Kohane: I discovered that.

Yuuko: Indeed.

-13-

Kohane: For that end,
Kohane: I believe it's better that I don't have my powers.

Kohane: I thought if I had them, even as a child I might be able to protect mama,
Kohane: but that was impossible.

Yuuko: Wrong.

Yuuko: You protected your mother
as much as you possibly could.

-14-

Side text: The "wish" has finally came out of Kohane's mouth!! How will Yuuko answer to Kohane, who says she wants to save her mother at the price of the abilities she possesses!?

Kohane: ... I wonder.

Yuuko: You did.

Kohane: I'd like to give my powers as payment in order to stop the people who say bad things about mama in the TV, newspapers, Internet and all,
Kohane: so that mama can live in that house properly.

Sigh... This arc really is going all the way to the end of the volume, isn't it? Kohane is cute and all, but I'd really like to see stuff like Watanuki's and Yuuko's natures dealt with.

Page 3: Doumeki, stop torturing Watanuki and me and ask for more common ingredients, will you?

Page 4: This font they use in normal dialogue needs to DIE. I'd say "slowly and painfully", but "slowly" would make me put up with it while it dies, so I'll opt for "quickly and painfully". And what the heck, Watanuki, hadn't we gone through this before?

Page 6: I'm not the only one who thinks Watanuki totally looks like a housewife in the last panel, am I?

Pages 9-14: You know, if -I- were in Kohane's situation, I'd probably be asking to work at the shop instead. If given a choice between going back to a psychotic mother and staying somewhere I can get guidance in the natural and supernatural departments, spend time with my only friend and have a cute black manjuu to cheer me up? You bet I wouldn't be going back.

'Housewife' was what I was thinking about Watanuki throughout the entire scene. It was cute and dorky. I love it when moments between the two happen where food is involved.

As for Kohane I agree with you. If I was her, I'd offer to work in the shop in exchange for guidance and teachings. I certainly wouldn't go back to her mother.

I hope this arc is over soon. Bring back Himawari, CLAMP!

If my mother was a psychopath? I'd probably do the same thing but look back on it and hate myself for the rest of my life knowing I had a chance to save my mother but chose to save my own ass instead.

All it's really showing is how deeply Kohane loves her mother. We're only getting the picture of her mother as a psycho, but Kohane remembers how she used to be, and just wants that person to have happiness.

I have issues with my own mother as well (not quite this extreme), so I don't know that I can say I'd do the same if I was in Kohane's shoes, but I think it's an admirable quality nonetheless. =]

mmm onigiri exchange

for some reason i thought the conversation between watanuki and doumeki had a lot more going on. The conversation about onigiri is exactly parallel to the conversation about food. It's a Yuuko-ism in action: balanced and equal exchanges. (going to literary here!) Anyway. Thanks for the translation!

I got the same feeling! It kind of gives off an ominous feeling with just how much food he had to force Watanuki to make for him this time.

I want to see the food exchange as Watanuki accepting more...and I think on some level Doumeki might feel guilty. That expression after Watanuki says he knew doumeki would be there makes me think that Doumeki feels bad...I don't know...I want to say that he wants to push Watanuki back into a bit of his ranting emotion because that way he won't be as mellow...

And Yuuko's "People need wishes in order to enter this shop" brings me back to Doumeki and his ability to be in there now all the time. I mean sure Yuuko called him originally...but that still doesn't vouch for his now constant presence in the shop...and Apparently he spent the night too XDD

I think Doumeki is more worried about Watanuki right now than being guilty. Doumeki knows that harder times are coming, Yuuko wanted him to keep the other egg for Watanuki's sake or something, and then Watanuki's attitude suddenly changes so that can't be good.

He was able to enter the shop after Watanuki fell out of the window and nearly died. Up until that point Doumeki was able to protect Watanuki one way or another. But even after Doumeki warned Watanuki, not to mention being in the same vicinity, he wasn't able to save him in time. Three prices were paid and even then Yuuko said there was a chance Watanuki might not survive. I bet you Doumeki was getting really desperate by this point because he couldn't really do anything by his lonesome so that's why he was able to enter the shop.

Yea that one time with the window would have been him and Himawari's wish...but...unless his wish was either compensated by his blood and by swearing protection to Watanuki...or his wish consisted of always being able to be with Watanuki even inside Yuuko's shop...I don't know..i agree that he's more worried (and i had forgotten about the egg. though i was thinking about it like a week ago) and he realizes that things are gonna only get harder...still...I'm still wondering about his standing with Watanuki and always trailing him now....it's getting rare for them to be apart.
