Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, chapitre 160
Early raws, YAY! Thanks to [info]cloud9_alice for providing them, and to the anonymous commenter who let me know they were out.

Chapitre 160
Promise from a far-off day

-01- (splash: Sakura)

For the ones she simply loves
the sleeping princess
continues to wander.

-02-

Yuui: I can't die.

Yuui: Not until Fai is revived.
Yuui: Not until I give him back
this name and his life.

Ashura-ou: Then, you must kill, right?
Him.

-03-

Ashura-ou: And,
I must have you grant my wish.

-06-

Yuui: These are...

Yuui: the memory... feathers...?

Yuui: It's like he said... An amazing power.

Yuui: This is for Fai... (T/N: Actually, the sentence lacks a verb. I tried to go with something generic enough.)

-07-

Yuui: Let's make the feather into not a feather, but a person's form,
Yuui: so that it'll stay by Fai's side even when I'm not there.

Yuui: The other is for when I leave on my journey. (T/N: Same as previous note.)

Yuui: I wonder what kind of people they are.

Yuui: ......

Yuui: This has nothing
to do with me.

-08-

Yuui: Because even if we're travelling together, it's not the same.

Villager: Thank you very much, wizard-sama! (T/N: Kanji for "wizard" reads the usual "magician".)

Villager: As expected from the person who carries the D title of supreme magician!
Yuui: ... No.
Yuui: I'm... glad that no one got hurt.

-09-

Freckle-chan: Thank you!

Freckle-chan: But, I'd be even happier if you smiled.

Freckle-haha: Geeze, this child!
I'm very sorry!
Yuui: Don't.

Yuui: I can't smile very well.
Yuui: I'm not used to it.

-10-

Freckle-chan: You should practice!

Freckle-chan: See, like this!

Guard: Welcome.
Yuui: I'm back. (T/N: He says ただいま, so you could have "I'm home" if you want, though I'm not sure he means it so "warmly".)

Guard: Today is really cold too.
Guard: Complaining will get you nowhere. (T/N: Originally: "Don't speak of things that can't be helped by speaking.")

-11-

Guard: Precisely because it won't get me anywhere, I want to at least complain.

Guards: You just smiled!
Yuui: Was it strange?

Guard: No! It was okay!
Guard: You should smile more!

Guard: Ashura-ou will also be happy.

-12-

Yuui: ... His Majesty too.

Yuui: I have just returned. (T/N: More formal version of ただいま.)

Ashura-ou: Welcome.
Ashura-ou: Seems like you've subdued the avalanche in the western valley.

Yuui: How can you tell?

Ashura-ou: I can.

-13-

Ashura-ou: Even if you're far away,
Ashura-ou: even if you're in another world, I can tell.

Ashura-ou: Your magic is

Ashura-ou: the real thing, Fai.

Ashura-ou: Should you become lost in some world,
Ashura-ou: I'll go pick you up.

-14-

Yuui: ... What should I do?

Yuui: I mean, about what you wanted to request from me?

-15-

Ashura-ou: ... I wonder,
Ashura-ou: do you love Celes?

Yuui: ...... Ashura-ou.
Ashura-ou: Do you love this country?

Yuui: Yes.
Yuui: Everyone is kind.
Besides...
Yuui: I'm allowed to stay here.

Ashura-ou: Then,

-16-

Ashura-ou: should something happen, will you use your power for the sake of this country?

Yuui: ... But, if someone with
stronger magic powers than mine appears in this country...

Ashura-ou: You're cursed to kill that person, right?

Ashura-ou: I can't remove that,
but I can suppress it.
Ashura-ou: Your magic power is something that grows stronger the more you use it.

-17-

Ashura-ou: If this is traced on your body,
Ashura-ou: further growth of your magic powers will be restrained until the pattern disappears.

Ashura-ou: Though if I die,
Ashura-ou: it'll lose its effect.

Yuui: Die, you...?
Ashura-ou: People die,
all the time.

-18-

Ashura-ou: I would like you
Ashura-ou: to destroy those who bring harm to the people of this country.

Ashura-ou: No matter who that person is.

Yuui: ... Majesty?

Ashura-ou: That's my wish.

-19-

Yuui: ... If
Yuui: it's all right for the time I stay in this world.

Ashura-ou: Thank you, Fai.

Ashura-ou: You promised me.
That, to those who brought harm to the people of this country you'd deliver...

Yuui: Death. (T/N: More rewording fun to accomodate the split sentence. It was originally "that you'd kill those who brought harm to the people of this country".)

-20-

Kurogane: Get this farce over with!

Teaser: What does
his companion's shout mean?

Ashura-ou looks weird in the present-time panels.

Okay. Yuui being a child prodigy "wizard-sama", if anything, makes me even more uneasy about him.

There, Chi/Fai shippers, I have a replacement OTP for you: Fai/Freckle-chan! XD (Oh, I just -had- to go and say "Freckle-chan", didn't I? Now I've "officially" dubbed her.)

XD at the guards' conversation. They totally are the Doumeki and Watanuki of Celes! How could Yuui possibly -not- smile at that? ^_^

Page 13 Ashura-ou == ♥

I'm seriously confused about the whole interaction between the first curse and the tattoo. I almost thought I had messed up big time with the curse's statement, but other translators agreed on it, and there is no possible opposite interpretation this time. So... The curse kills people with stronger magic. Okay. Ashura-ou gives Yuui a tattoo to keep his magic from getting stronger. I don't like the idea of evil Ashura-ou, but okay. And Yuui is so happy about it that it was valuable enough to use as payment for Mokona? What. The. Hell?

Now that I've seen Ashura-ou's expressions as the promise of doom™ was made, I'm quite sure: whether Ashura-ou has currently gone insane or not, Yuui is missing the point of the promise. Like, totally.

Yeap, you are totally right.

The tattoo thing is strange, I think that price should have been something related to his brother, or at least to his promise to revive him. But now we have this. And Fay isn't exactly my favorite character right now.

But thank you so much for the translation!

You know what was I thinking about the tattoo and Kurogane's phrase? That Fay is lying right now, maybe he doesn't want to revive his brother anymore. That could explain why the tattoo was his most important thing. He wanted to repress his magic, his curse, (but that wouldn't explain why he always said 'I can't die yet, I have something to do', maybe it is an entirely different thing).

And could explain why we don't see his eyes while he says 'I have to revive Fay' in the first pages. And Kurogane's line, of course.

i think the tatoo help no kill other people and that make very happy to Yuui because he have many death in his councious ever he kill them or not because is what he belive!!! and may i add he must kill at least two persons in his future!!
And now we know why he didn't want to use his magic without the tatoo!!
I can't understand Kuro, me in his situation will to Kill Ashura because he is making confuse Fay and maybe suffer the kid so why try to kill him???? and he is very serius about it and broke the concentration of Fye i'm very sad!!!
about the girl she teach Fye to mask his feelings with the smile wow for her!!

And Fay don't want to kill Ashura because he is the first person to give him kidness, but because he don't futfill the promise all died!! Fay you must face your pasat and do your homework with Ashura and forget about your bro like you decide in Tokyo!!!!!

The tattoo thing still makes no sense to me. The curse is to kill magically stronger people. You should protect your magic from becoming -weak-, so that no more people get into the curse's range, right? But he's stopping the growth of his magic? If Yuui's magic had been allowed to grow freely, wouldn't that make it so that he'd eventually get to a point where only a handful of people are still in range?

*brainbreakage*

Yay, awesome translation! Thank you so much. ♥

Re: the curse and tattoo: I figure that the tattoo blocks the curse at the cost of not allowing his magic any further growth. The range of people that could possibly be affected by his curse doesn't get any smaller (since he can't get stronger, magic-wise), but there's the possibility that he won't have to kill anyone until after Ashura dies. And by then ... well, does it really matter?

As for not using his magic after the tattoo was gone ... he probably associated the tattoo with practicing his magic safely (even though really the best thing he could have done was use his magic LOTS AND LOTS to diminish the possible range for his curse) and thus was too scared to use his magic without the safety net. It fits in with his general reluctance to face his past, even though it isn't the most logical / effective route to be taking. Those're my thoughts on it, anyway!

Hmmm, that makes sense, that the tattoo would somehow redirect the extra magic power to stopping the curse.

Yuui's refusal to use magic after losing the tattoo plus the fact that he apparently did not question the absurd of capping his powers' growth (Ashura-ou's explanation was quite lacking in my opinion) makes me think if it wasn't in his interest to "save" the curse for later. As much as I loved his responsible-prince self, I don't quite trust him after Fei Wang screwed his mind.

I......am so confused. XD As usual.

The tattoo magic suppression thing makes no sense; it keeps his magic from getting stronger? o_O That's like...the opposite of what they should want it to do, unless they actually want Fai to go about killing people.

Last week I was all "OMG CAN'T WAIT FOR 160 CUZ IT'LL MAKE SENSE THEN" and...nothing really got cleared up, just more questions. So now I have to sit around going "CAN'T WAIT FOR 161 SPOILERS!" in hopes that 161 will be present-time. I think Fai's past is something that would be way better to read in volume-version. With the flashbacks + present-time events, it's torture to go week by week.

I still don't understand why Fai thinks he has to kill Kurogane, and why Kurogane is attacking Fai. Blah. Stop it, you guys. (Although I'd actually probably enjoy this fight more if I wasn't so terrified of the result, ahaha).

Thank you for the translation~♥

Rinse. Lather. Repeat. No, seriously, we've been doing this for how long now?

As I said, I think Yuui is totally missing the point of the promise. He told Ashura-ou beforehand that he'd only be protecting the Celesians while he stayed in that world. Ashura-ou was perfectly okay with that. Then Yuui sealed him, fled, and now Ashura-ou seems to be bitter because Yuui broke his promise? Considering that he -knew- Yuui would leave one day? Hello, Yuui, the target -can't- be Kurogane, simply because Kurogane -wasn't- in Celes by the time you left!

Well, the tatoo thing is quite confusing. But by putting it on Fay, Ashura is in a way guarding himself; because if he dies, the tatoo will disappear and the curse will activate again. So Fay is in a way forced to protect him.

Fay is condemned to kill whoever will be stronger than him... but maybe he hopes that, if person is really stronger... this person can kill him instead? You know if the gap was huge... and notice he said his magic were to grew each time he used it and Fay refused to use it...

Or maybe he was afraid that, if the first curse weren't broken his Wish won't be fulfilled?

Ahh! Thank you so, so, so much. ;_;

I'll put down my theories for this chapter before I forget.... XD;;

This cleared up a few things for me, actually. o_o; I don't like what Ashura did, however, because I think it was just pretty pointless. They could've just helped Fai so he could become as strong as possible.. T__T; And then, there would be no need for the dumb tattoo! (I have to wonder what he'd have given Yuuko...)

I'll assume that Fai (I'm going to call him Fai because I'm used to it :[) sealed Ashura away because he didn't want Ashura to come after him and take him back to Celes. He seems determined to do the impossible, so he just followed FWR... :(

But what I don't understand is why he's attacking Kurogane. Is it for FWR or Ashura? Kurogane hasn't posed as a threat, has he? D:

If Ashura-ou is trying to make any sense at all in the present time, then Kurogane is threatening the siblings themselves. He said to kill Kurogane, -and- (a very clear "and", not something embedded in the verb ending) to fulfill his wish. Killing Kurogane and fulfilling Ashura-ou's wish could be separate things.

Now the tattoo, that's one that isn't trying to make sense. ><

I'd think Yuui can go without feeding for a while before he dies of vampiric starvation. It's a risky bet, though -- if he kills Kurogane, he only has that while to either succeed at reviving Fai or taking his eye back from the clone. Now, Kurogane interrupted his spell during the drawing of the magic circle. Makes me wonder if it was really an attack spell, or if he was going to run off again.

Fay really isn't thinking straight at all. He says he can't die before he revives his brother, but killing Kurogane would do just that. And yes, he really has missed the entire point of the promise. Where's Taishakuten when you need him? D:

The problem that Yuui killing Kurogane will inevitably lead to his own death (though I supposed there'd still be some time before he actually died) makes me think of how Yuuko is the greatest scheming bastard to ever walk the face of the multiverse. She's even taking advantage of the clone. Fei Wang Reed has a lot to learn before he can match up to her.

Thanks for the translation. Your translations are always so clear and fluid. They're a pleasure to read.

You're sure right about pages 16-17 being weird. I wonder if Fai's first curse is permanent or not-- like does he have to kill everyone whose magic is stronger than his forever? The only reason I can think of for Fai to want to stay weak is so that he would be too weak to succeed in killing someone specific that his curse would otherwise demand he kill. So say there's a specific person who he knows would be stronger than him no matter how strong he got, but if he stayed weak that person might be so much stronger than him that he could try to kill him, as his curse demands, but wouldn't be strong enough to do it. It's all pretty convoluted, so I'm sure it's probably wrong-- but maybe dead-Fai could fit that criteria if he was alive again. If Fai did all that work and made all those sacrifices to revive dead-Fai and then dead-Fai was stronger than him, he'd have to kill him again, right? So amybe then it would be worth staying weak even though it would leave a larger potential pool of other people he'd have to kill.

*waves to Riku* You're welcome, and thanks for the compliments! I try to improve. ^_^

What you said makes some sense, but Yuui would have to bet on the victim defending emself (and the power difference being large enough for it to actually make a difference), because as we've seen, both from what really happened and from what would have happened, the curse doesn't force him to use magic as the killing weapon: he uses whatever is available.

The only reason I can think of for not wanting to limit the range of the curse is fear of crossing Fei Wang by limiting it so much that the intended target falls out of range. But even that makes no sense because as far as we know, Yuui had no idea there was an intended target to begin with. One thing I'm not very sure about is Sakura: did she -actually- fall into range, or did her trade also affect that?

Poor Yuui is actually losing both ways? He needs Ashura to be alive to keep his tattoo, but he can't kill Kuro because he's still a vampire and if Kuro dies, he dies. However, with the tattoo already given as a token to Yuuko, it shouldn't matter if Ashura dies anymore, does it?

Indeed, Ashura-ou seems to have been rendered useless as far as the tattoo issue goes. Yuui doesn't even have the tattoo anymore, and didn't Sakura succeed at breaking the curse? Maintaining the tattoo's effect is utterly pointless.

I'm still confused but from what I can gather, I think Yuui never liked Ashura being able to know where he is. And if his magic grows stronger, the "signal power" of his magic will be a homing device for Ashura to bring him back to Celes and fulfill the wish of destroying people who bring harm to Celes. I assume Yuui does not enjoy killing hence he is happy to have his power suppressed which means Ashura might possibly have trouble finding him again when he leaves.

Ashura-ou said Yuui's magic was already strong enough that it'd enable him to be tracked even in another world. It makes (a little) sense that Yuui wouldn't use magic during the journey for fear of leaving a trail, but the strenght is irrelevant if I understood correctly. And isn't Ashura-ou giving him a tattoo that would hinder his ability to track Yuui kinda like shooting one's own foot?

Finally we knows why Fye didn´t want to use magic: not to be detectable for Ashura-ou and not to grow stronger. I wonder how strong he would be now if he got his eye back - after Syaoran and himself using and increasing the powers. And does this mean the powers he has in chapter 2 (like to switch dimension) he already had as a little child?

What is Ashura´s real purpose? Evil or not?

Thanks for the translation ^^
I'm confused..
When he is save from that curse with the tatoo..it makes no sense, that he have to save the country as Ashuras wish..then he must kill someone too...( like Kuro )
This makes no sense at all..-.- that the tattoo is so important to Fye, when he promised to kill people, who bring harm to this country.
And all of the country are dead already... why he have to kill Kuro now?

( XD hope you will understand, what I mean.. with this english o.O )

I guess Yuui -can- kill outside of the curse, after all he wouldn't make a very useful guardian angel if he was prohibited to kill outside it, but the whole thing doesn't make sense either way.

Ashura-ou and Yuui himself still count as "people of Celes", I guess, but as I said in another comment, maybe killing Kurogane has nothing to do with Ashura-ou's wish, and rather just with protecting Yuui's own wish -- meaning that the threat Kurogane poses is to the siblings.

Thank you!!! &hearts
Yeah, the guards are cute X333
Hm...interesting about the tattoo...so it only stops his magic from growing...isn't it a bad thing then? The weaker his magic is the more people are stronger than him...ne? *really confused*
...maybe Yuui didn't understand it as well? It was at least the only thing of importance he possessed, maybe that he could see whether Ashura was still alive?
But shouldn't his memories of Fay or his wish to revive him actually be more important to him..........?
The promise with Ashura scares me...and his smile has this hint of fake/evil...> <
Ok...I don't get it at all ^^;;;

You're welcome!

Moron Yuui doesn't really convince me. I think he understood perfectly well what it meant to keep his powers from growing. Beats me why he'd like the idea so much, though.

Thanks as usually for translation, Ashura sama!!

Oh well, in this chapter Ashura-o is absolutely fantastic! I'm totally in love with him!!
And there is Miyukichan again, in the crowd in front of Fay, at page 8!

I'm waiting for new spoiler and, please, CLAMP, stop this neverendig flashback! Well, until July 30th no Holic new chapter will be released, so make something interesting happens in TRC too! Stop flashback!

You're welcome!

Knowing CLAMP's evilness, it'll go like this: 161 has 15 more flashback pages, Yuui reacts to Kurogane interrupting his spell, ends with Yuui threatening to kill Kurogane; 162 has the final 15 flashback pages, Kurogane reacts to Yuui's reaction, ends with either Kurogane threatening to kill Yuui or Kurogane threatening to make swiss cheese out of Fai. And then break. And then Holic 141 will be fully Kohane arc with no mention of Sakura, Shaoran and Watanuki's parents at all.

Freckle-chan is the cutest thing ever!! What an adorable little smile! And yes, I will be calling her Freckle-chan from now on! ^^

But wow, if ever there was a cliffhanger... I just glad that CLAMP weren't evil enough to say "Right, time for a break"! I would die.

Thanks for the translation! I was really excited about the dialoge of this week's flashabck.

No, they're saving that for 162.

Thanks for the translation =)

I really don't get it. Shouldn't Fai's magic not be curbed when he must kill those who are stronger than him? Isn't it better for him to get stronger than anyone else so that he doesn't have to kill? *shrugs*

You're welcome!

And yup, no one is quite getting it. The only thing I can think of is that he's afraid of crossing Fei Wang Reed. Not that it makes much sense either.
